Wireless Internet Policy

Introduction

The Starr Library provides the convenience of unfiltered wireless Internet access for patrons with laptops equipped with a wireless card. It enables patrons to search the library's catalog, check e-mail or browse the World Wide Web. This access is in addition to the Library's wired LAN network.

By choosing to utilize this service, patrons agree to abide by the Library's posted Computer use policy. It is the responsibility of the computer user to understand that policy, and to refrain from viewing inappropriate websites, spamming, or other illegal activities.

Use of the wireless network is at one's own risk, and the Starr Library is not responsible for any damage to a patron's computer while connected, or to data or information lost during transmission.

Security

Wireless networking is a broadcast and shared form of communication, and as such presents a variety of additional issues and security risks that are not present with a wired connection. Wireless data protocols also use the shared 2.4 GHz frequency airspace which is open and used by a variety of other technologies, including but not limited to: cordless phones, microwave ovens, and BlueTooth devices. These technologies also present reliability and performance issues for wireless networking.

Wireless connections, not as secure as a wired network, can be intercepted very easily.

Computer requirements

Patrons’ laptops must have a wireless interface card (NIC), 802.11 b-g standard to operate within the Library’s wireless network. Wireless devices must also have a charged battery.

Printing

There is no wireless printing available. Patrons should use a wired computer to print.

Technical Support

The library staff does not provide technical support. Patrons should contact the manufacturer or retailer of their laptop or NIC card if they are unable to connect to the library’s network. We do not install or configure computer components.

Availability

The Starr Library makes every effort to ensure its wireless network is up and available, but does not guarantee that service will be available at any specific time.

Note:

The Starr Library provides the convenience of unfiltered wireless Internet access for patrons with laptops equipped with a wireless card. The Starr Library assumes no responsibility for any alterations or interference with a laptop’s configuration, operation, or data files resulting from any connection to its wireless network.

Patrons shall defend, indemnify and hold the Starr Library, its officers, employees and agents harmless against all claims, actions and judgments based upon or arising out of the patron’s use of Library wireless connections.
